ABSTRACT: This book course is designed for all levels of mental health practitioners to help them learn about the EMDR methodology as used with war and terrorism survivors, and an opportunity for EMDR trained clinicians to learn of issues and procedures when working with such clients while earning 10 CE credits.

BOOK DESCRIPTION: This book is the first for the utilization of EMDR with war and terrorism survivors. Readers will learn about the application of EMDR with clients suffering from trauma reactions to war and terrorism as well as basic principles of relief work. The EMDR method is reviewed and is built on to prepare the reader for working with war and terrorism clients, including the nature of war and terrorism trauma, the experience of EMDR from both a client and a therapist perspective, particular issues and opportunities when the eight-phase EMDR treatment protocol is used with these clients, the use of EMDR in a crisis intervention environment, working with children, and special issues including grief, guilt, and anger. Working cross culturally and issues that can arise in relief work for mass trauma situations are both addressed, as is research.

  1. Identify the differences between war trauma and noncombat trauma.
  2. Identify the usefulness of EMDR in relief work.
  3. Describe how the EMDR model can be adapted for relief work.
  4. Identify what the therapist attributes the EMDR methodology shares with other psychotherapies.
  5. Identify ways in which the eight phases of the EMDR methodology may be effected by a client’s responses to war and terrorism trauma.
  6. Describe the variation in the EMDR methodology for the Recent Events Protocol.
  7. Identify issues from children’s exposure to war and terrorism.
  8. Describe the procedures for a client’s preparation and encounter with abreaction.
  9. Identify the characteristics distinguishing traumatic war grief from normal grief.
  10. Describe the potentially negative effects of a therapist’s reactions to a client’s guilt reaction.
  11. Describe how a war survivor’s presentation of anger may be used as a self-protection mechanism.

TESTING MEASURE: 80 question multiple-choice test. 80% is a passing score.

Tests are scored within 5 business days of receipt of answer sheet and signed Course Verification and Evaluation Forms. Results, including a CE certificate of completion, will be sent within 3 business days. Upon request, scores and certificates will be faxed.

REQUIREMENTS: Completion of test, receipt of Evaluation/Satisfaction and signed Verification Form. Course completion must be accomplished within 2 years of purchase date.
