Dr. Shapiro demonstrates the eight-phase EMDR protocol with Angie, a recovering addict struggling with the sudden loss of her lover. As the session opens, Angie, a real client, believes that she is to blame for her lover’s death. By its close, she has made significant strides toward her own goal of lessening the pain without numbing herself with more drugs. At the heart of the interviews is Dr. Shapiro’s use of EMDR therapy for linking past experiences, present-day triggers for the memories, and the new learning that needs to occur for adaptive resolution of the trauma. Viewers watch as Dr. Shapiro encourages Angie to call up target memories, hold them, allow associated thoughts and feelings to surface, and then let them go.
